Fencing and gravel boards

Q

I would like to know if it is ok to use timber gravel boards with concrete fence posts rather than concrete gravel boards. Timber is working out cheaper and I think the concrete ones dont look very nice your advice would be appreciated?

A

It is ok to use timber gravel boards with concrete fence posts but you need to make sure the timber is treated or tanalised to prevent it from rotting. The main cause for timber fencing to rot is contact with soil as the timber is constantly drawing moisture from the soil like a sponge.  I would suggest raising the timber off the ground slightly with either bricks, slabs or something similar.
