How to remove soot from brickwork

I have a wood burner in my livingroom and the flue was not fixed properly and has now been sorted but there is black soot over all the brickwork. What is going to be the best way of removing it and if I cant shift the soot what are my alternative options?

I would try using soapy water and a wire brush.

If it is really stubborn then you could try applying a diluted brick acid but make sure you you follow the details on the bottle because if the acid is to concentrated it can damage the brickwork.

If the above fail to do anything then the other options are to,

Paint with a heat proof masonry paint,

Sand and cement render over the brickwork as this will not crack when it is subjected to high temperatures,

Apply Brick cladding over the top of the existing brickwork.
